No – I haven’t unexpectedly just taken up sailing – this is really a quilting technique.
But I did decide that it was time to start using some of the Scrap Therapy scraps I have been collecting. So I gathered my ‘cut scraps’ and decided to make the Town Tote in Joan Ford’s first book Cut the Scraps.
I have used the furling technique but never knew what it was called. After seeing the term in her book, I did a Google search and found multiple hits with video’s and detailed instructions. (What did we quilters ever do before the internet? We have a wealth of information right at our fingertips.)
Simply after sewing butted seams together
2 or 3 stitches are removed from each side of the sewn unit
and the center pressed open forming a small 4-patch.
Also the main seams lie in the same clockwise direction so that when the blocks are sewn together the seams are positioned so that they easily nest together.
Now to finish the tote!
There is always time to quilt!
